Biography

Mary Brooks Morgan Sewell (May 16, 1945 – February 1, 2010), passed away quietly and peacefully in the early morning hours at home to be with her Lord and Savior.  She fought a courageous nine year battle with breast cancer.  Mary Brooks was surrounded in love by her husband, Van, and her two daughters, Sarah S. (Mike) Lockhart and Rachel Sewell.  Mary Brooks was a native of Savannah, Georgia.  She was nurtured in the ways of Christ while she attended Hull Memorial Presbyterian Church where her deceased parents Ed and Sarah Morgan were long time members.  Mary Brooks attended Moore Avenue Elementary, Richard Arnold Junior High School, and graduated from Savannah High School in 1963.  She was Miss Savannah in 1966.  Mary Brooks and Van first met in kindergarten, but did not begin dating until college.  She is a 1968 graduate of Armstrong State College, now Armstrong Atlantic University.  She and her husband of 40 years were members of the Savannah Golf Club where they were active in the tennis community.  Mary Brooks was a member of the Savannah and Atlanta Junior League.  She was a beloved fifth grade teacher for over 30 years, and taught in Savannah, Georgia; Munich, Germany; and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.  Mary Brooks also devoted 17 of those years teaching with the Gwinnett County Public Schools at Berkeley Lake Elementary School where she was honored as Teacher of the Year.  After her retirement, she continued to teach at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Norcross, Georgia.  Mary Brooks devoted her life to her family and many students.  She demanded excellence, accountability, individual responsibility, and grammatically correct written and spoken communication.  She would be appalled at anything less than her student’s best effort. She is loved and respected by everyone that knows her.  Mary Brooks is also survived by her brother Rece (Catherine) Morgan of Alpharetta; sister-in-laws Nancy S. (Tommy) Hester of Savannah; Patricia S. (Bob) Cresswell of Lake Oconee; Susan S. (Steve) Brantley of Marietta; and many nieces and nephews and four grand-nieces.  Visitation will be this Friday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. and Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at Crowell Brothers Funeral Home 5051 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Norcross, Georgia 30092.  A funeral service will be held at Peachtree Corners Baptist Church, 4480 Peachtree Corners Circle, Norcross, Georgia 30092, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. with interment in a private ceremony at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta later that day.  Online condolences may be expressed at www.crowellbrothers.com.
