Obituary for Halbert Hutson Foley

Halbert “Chub” Foley of Vienna passed away, in Alpharetta, Georgia, on February 21, 2019 at the age of 89. He was born on his family’s farm in Waverly, WV on September 1, 1929. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alyce Reed, of Parkersburg, and son, Lance. Hal passed on the day of his 66th wedding anniversary.
Hal is survived by his son, Patrick Foley (Karen); daughter, Lee Ann Schaffer (Chris); brother, Barney Foley; sisters, Patricia James and Mary “Tip” Gomillion; grandchildren Drew Hicks, Lauren Foley and Sean Foley.
After marriage, Hal and Alyce travelled across the country while he worked on a wide range of large construction projects including buildings, bridges, seaways and dams. He was an Iron Worker and a member of Local #787. Hal and Alyce returned to WV in 1957 to raise their family in Vienna. He continued iron work and eventually formed and operated Foley Steel Erectors until his retirement.
Hal was always a sports enthusiast. He played on many teams for St. Mary’s High School. He was member of the Vienna Recreational Improvement Association where he helped build and maintain the youth ball fields in Vienna and also coached baseball in Vienna for many years. In retirement, he tremendously enjoyed running and golf. Hal was a medal winner in the Arizona Senior Olympics for the 400 yard race.
In lieu of flowers, Hal would like any donations to go to Wayside United Methodist Church in Vienna.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, March 31 at 2:30 pm at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg. Following the service, a Celebration of Life reception will be at Wayside Church.
