Obituary for Sharon Murphy Garrett

Sharon Murphy Garrett was born January 9, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio, to the late William G. and Mary (Newlun) Murphy, and passed away June 10, 2019, after a long and hard-fought battle with Parkinson’s Disease. She was the youngest of four children. Sharon was preceded in death by her brother William G Murphy, Jr., and is survived by her brother Roger Murphy and sister Betty Searles, as well as many extended family members. Sharon received her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University, where she was a two-sport athlete, playing women’s basketball and field hockey. Sharon also served as the librarian of the Ohio State Marching Band (TBDBITL) for four years, and was active with the band for many years after graduation. She went on to receive her Masters Degree in Physical Education from Indiana University. Sharon met her beloved husband David at Camp Christian (Marysville, OH) in high school, and they were married on June 12, 1965. David and Sharon grieved the loss of their precious first child Christopher David (born 9/14/67) at just 15 months old. Despite that loss, or perhaps because of it, Sharon had a wonderful way of making sure that everyone knew they were loved. Her faith remained a steady influence in all aspects of her life, specifically in how she loved unconditionally and generously. Everyone was always included, invited and welcome at the Garrett household, and she was overjoyed by family reunions and big gatherings of friends. Sharon had a heart for those in need, shown by her dedication to special needs education (she received a Specialist degree in Learning and Behavior Disorders from The University of West Georgia and taught in the Cobb County school system) and her care and support of animals in need. Dave and Sharon were blessed with four children after Christopher; Heather (Randy) Niemann, Kim (John) Glisson, and her twin boys, Rob (Rose) Garrett and Tim (Jenn) Garrett. Sharon and Dave were overjoyed by the blessing of nine grandchildren, Daniel Niemann, Naomi Niemann, Rebekah Niemann, Caleb Glisson, Asher Glisson, Davis Garrett, Lane Garrett, Bellamy Garrett and the littlest Garrett, Genevieve Garrett. Sharon was an active leader in La Leche League International (serving as President, among other positions) and the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Clubs (NOMOTC), from which she received the Mother of the Year honor. She was also a beloved counselor at Camp Christian for several years, giving back to the camp that had a strong impact on her faith. Ohio State Football was another passion, holding season tickets for several decades. Sharon passed just two days before her 54th wedding anniversary, providing an enduring story of love over a lifetime for her children. While we mourn the loss of Sharon's loving spirit here, we celebrate that she is rejoicing with her Savior in heaven and enjoying the most wonderful reunion with those she loved, and we look forward to the day when we will all be reunited again. We love you and miss you, Sharon. Until then we will celebrate your kind and generous spirit in how we love each other and raise our kids with love in your example and reflection of God’s love for each of us. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. -2 Corinthians 5:6-8. In lieu of flowers you could donate to the Michael J. Fox Foundation www.michaeljfox.org/donate or the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) https://rarediseases.org. Online condolences may be expressed at www.crowellbrothers.com.
