Warren was born to Warren S. Wood, Sr. and Anne Estes Wood February 13, 1939 in Pickens, SC, joining his older sister, “Baby”Anne. In 1941 the Family moved to Newport News, VA.
At the age of 6, Warren was diagnosed with polio. He overcame polio and went on to be a fierce competitor on the gridiron, track and field, and in all areas of his life. Warren was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Coral Gables High School in Florida in 1957. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the Army and headed to boot camp at Fort Jackson, SC. Warren served his country in the Army and the Coast Guard and was honorably discharged.
Warren was hired by Newport News Shipbuilding on February 3, 1958. He was hired as a helper into the Shipfitters for $1.66 per hour. By excelling at his work, Warren quickly advanced to a handyman in July 1958 and was accepted into the Apprentice School as a shipfitter in January 1959. He graduated in April 1963. Warren played Football for the “Builder Gridmen” 59’-61’, Track 60’, House League Basketball 59’-60’, Cavalier Club 59’-62’ and the Student Council 60’-62’
Warren spent the bulk of his shipyard career directing the shaping and forming of the steel that would become submarines, aircraft carriers and cruisers in the Mold Loft and steel fabrication area. From July 1968 until January 1990 Warren assumed positions of increasing responsibility in steel fabrication including quarterman, production controller, planning supervisor, general foreman, construction supervisor, superintendent and construction manager. In February 1990, Warren assumed responsibility for all structural fitting and welding operations at the shipyard. He continued in that assignment until October 1993 when he moved to Commercial Ship Repair as a Superintendent. Warren led the repair of a variety of commercial and military vessels and also worked on the construction of Double Eagle tankers until May 1997 when he assumed responsibility for Production Engineering specifically supporting process improvements for the structural trades and facilities. During this time, Warren led the development of an Apprentice Planner program. He remained in Production Engineering, paving the way for new technology, until his retirement, as a Master Shipbuilder with 42 years of service in December 1999. Warren is remembered by generations of shipbuilders as a true gentleman with a knack for getting results.
Warren married his sweetheart Betty Patricia Pritchard November 18, 1961 and they remained happily married until his death. He and Betty attended First Baptist Church of Newport News where he served as a Deacon and was an active member of the Rotary Club of Smithfield, The Propeller Club - Port of Newport News and The May Club.
Warren will be remembered for his love and commitment to his wife, Betty, his family, his friends, his shipyard and the Tidewater. “Warren mobilized and empowered others to achieve beyond expectations”. “He took time to ask questions, to listen and to make informed decisions”. Warren was a no-nonsense kind of person – yet he was as non-sensical a person as you could find. Warren was always wearing a smile and he filled every room he ever walked into. He was a kind, sweet soul, filled with compassion and understanding. Warren will be missed like no other!
Warren is survived by his wife, Betty, his three sons, Warren Gregory Wood, Charles Furman Wood and William Armstrong Wood (Susan) and his grandchildren, Lily, Jack, Carter, Parker and Patrick Wood and his sister Anne Wood Armstrong (William).
The family wishes to thank the Staff at Seasons Hospice in Cumming, GA for the wonderful care they showed Warren and his family during his stay there.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the USO of Georgia, the Propeller Club-Port of Newport News or your favorite charity.
